From the idea to the Programme

Informationen zum Programm

The widespread prevalence of diet- and lifestyle-related diseases - such as obesity in children and adolescents, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, etc. - means that there is a need for

  • Target group-specific measures to promote healthy eating behaviour, including appropriate communication strategies, and
  • Measures to create living conditions that enable or promote healthy eating behaviour.

Since 2008, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH (AGES), the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (BMASGPK) and the umbrella organisation of social insurance institutions (DVSV - formerly the Main Association of Austrian Social Insurance Institutions or HVS) have been making the latest scientific findings in the field of infant and child nutrition and the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women available to everyone free of charge with the national programme ‘Eating right from the start!’. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK - formerly the Regional Health Insurance Funds or GKK) has always been the implementation partner.

Here you will find information about the team behind "Eat right from the start!"

How "healthy eating from the start!" was developed

The preliminary survey

The scientific data basis was collected in a preliminary survey in order to develop a targeted, problem-oriented and feasible programme and to plan individual measures.

Catalogues of measures

Based on well-founded literature and good practical examples Catalogues of measures (Cataloques of measures) for Austria, which list individual measures for relevant fields of action (e.g. breastfeeding promotion) and are thus intended to contribute to improving the quality of life of the target group.

To date, several of the recommended measures have been selected and implemented.

Actual and needs analyses

The usefulness and feasibility of measures for Austria are examined in actual and needs analyses.
If a measure is selected for implementation, the next step is to carry out detailed conceptualisation. Learning effects and findings are continuously incorporated into the catalogue of measures in the form of corrections.

The evaluation

In order to create a continuous optimisation process, programme processes and results are reviewed and accompanied by evaluations. In the course of the "Eat right from the start!" programme Evaluation reports will be published on the website.

The goal

The goal of improving the health situation of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants and children in Austria and thus achieving a better quality of life is an ongoing process.
